Almost burned.

We have been cruising around and occasionally gasoline has smelled and I didn't think of it much since it was occasionally and I put it on the warm weather and such. On Wednesday it smelled a lot. We were driving to friends house to pick up some goods and as my wife picked up those goods, I checked fast for fuel gap at rear. It was a locked right and tight, so smell didn't come from there. Then I opened the hood and straight away I saw a small stream of gasoline shooting out from the hose in the air. Right in front of carburator. I quickly shut the engine and as the pressure was releaving the stream stopped. Old hose had cracked just after the clamp. I didn't have the spear gasoline hose with me so I did a quick-fix and moved clamp over the crack and tightened it really good. That did it and we went to local car parts store and I bought new gasoline hose.

So lesson to be learned is to keep checking under the hood that everything is good and doesn't show wear and tear.

Numbers of the year!

http://tdp.kuvat.fi/kuvat/1970+El+Camino/
56899 miles.

The year is ending and El Camino isn't moving anymore this year, so it's time to see what and how far we rolled this year. Out of the garage in April and back to (different) garage in November. So that 7 months of driving around and we rolled 3614.3 miles(5816.7 km). A bit over 500 miles per month, not bad as we didn't take any longer trips this year. Last year we did trip to Northern Finland and rolled 1300 miles on a single trip and month!

Average mileage is around 18 litres per 100 km. A increase from last year's ~17 l/100km. I bought a new tires with wheels last year and had to install them under El Camino in September. Originals were 14" wheels and I'm not sure were those tires 215/60 or 205/65, The new set was 15" wheels with 215/70 and we drove with the new tires only two months so it didn't affect that much on last year's mileage, but I hoped it would show in this year, but no. Okay, we had more in city drives than longer drives so that is a one reason why mileage increased. One thing that should help getting lower mileage is installing a insulator between manifold and carburetor, by lowering carburetor heat energy and thus eliminating excess fuel vaporation in carburetor.

Keeping on the road.

Wow. It has been a long time since last post. To fill the cap, here's the re-cap from last post:

Power steering, working. Driver's side door latch from inside stopped working, made quick fix. Fuel gauge working. Passanger side exhaust leaking. Installed roof insulation/noise cancelling. 50 k on odometer. Flat tire. Bought new set of tires on a 15" steel wheels. New battery, melted (-)-pole. Installed old battery. Starter broken, starter fixed from three different starter. Installed H4 lamps. Drived 1303 miles in 12 days on summer vacation. Fixed leaking vacuum hose. Finded whole inside lamp assembly from a swap. Quick fixed squeeky hood noises. Burnt AC/heater fan switch. Bought new AC/heater fan switch.

So, there has been something fixing going on but few new things come up to light. Well, everyone knows that old car is a working progress.

Cheers!
